I. Victoria

Evening opens like a postcard,
icon of cosmopolitan triumph,
a symphony of colour and concrete
embellishes this pearl of East,

where skyscrapers stand curiously
as descendants of mountains and huts,
among glitters like salt in darkness
or residues of the Shek Kip Mei's fire;

where phantoms of fishermen, silhouettes
of junks and sampans linger, the veiling
of an opium story beneath a harbour
obstinate and inky as the past.

II. JCCAC

Some place of poverty, cheap labour,
a nine-storey factory fabulous like
caterpillar transformed to caterpillar,
you witnessed the rise and fall of industry,
dark corners heaped with candelabra,
clock accessories, bamboo basins,
plastic hangers until tenants were cleared,
dust on tarmac, heavy and alone.

An arts village of life, new skin
still austere, you embrace the same crafts
and labours, heat of the sun penetrating
the glass roof inspiring paintings, sculptures,
potteries, music clashing with music,
some performance artist creeping in basement,
shut out a hunchback collecting paper boxes
in the narrow street, hungry and alone.

III. I Take No Pills

On 13th December 2008, two bottles of acid rained down on the shopping district of Sai Yeung Choi Street South, injuring 46 passers-by. Nobody has yet been arrested.

Overwhelmed by neon signs, logos
without spirit, faces without purpose,

footprints of zombies, the showcases supply
every material but where am I?

Target identified, that gray building
behind, on 13th floor I'd throw something

fatally awful out the window, frantic
screams in the street, legs fleeing in panic,

the wide coverage in newspapers, too
would make my cinematic story come true.

As though scripted, I fetch a pair of goggles,
gloves, some burning acid in plastic bottles,

resolve to carry out the task tomorrow –
something whose existence I never know.
